Bikini total hip arthroplasty is an advanced surgical procedure aimed at replacing a damaged or diseased hip joint with an artificial implant.

It is called a “bikini” because of the incision location used during the surgery, which results in a less noticeable scar, hidden in the “bikini line.” During the procedure, you will be placed under anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free throughout the surgery.

A small incision along your bikini line allows for less tissue disruption and reduces the recovery time compared to traditional hip replacement surgery.

Once the incision is made, the hip joint is accessed by moving aside the muscles and other tissues. The damaged parts of the hip joint, such as the diseased cartilage and bone, are removed. The remaining bone surfaces are prepared to accommodate the artificial implant.

The artificial implant consists of a metal femoral component that replaces the damaged upper part of the thigh bone with a ceramic head(femur) and a metal component with a plastic liner that replaces the damaged socket in the pelvis (acetabulum). These components are designed to mimic the natural movement and function of a healthy hip joint.

After the implant is in place, the incision is closed in layers and a sterile dressing is applied to protect the wound. Following the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery area, and within a few hours of surgery, you will be up and walking.
